Dr Belinda Morrison: Improving men’s health care
A sort of knowing smile accompanies Dr Belinda Morrison’s revelation that she has a particular interest in Andrology — the study of male sexual dysfunction. “I don’t know why,” says the young lady who some friends and patients refer to as ‘Doctor B’.
Seriously, though, she does know. “I’m particularly interested in that because of sickle cell disease in Jamaica,” she tells All Woman. “A lot of people don’t realise that it’s very, very common in Jamaica. The disorder is seen in one in every 300 births in Jamaica and one in every 150 births has the full blown disease.”
JCS Urges Men to be Proactive
As Jamaica observes Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) is urging men, particularly those over the age of 40 years, to be proactive and do the necessary screening for the disease.
In an interview with JIS News, Consultant Urologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies and Lecturer and Head of Urology at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Belinda Morrison, explained that by the time most of her patients come to her, they already are at an advanced stage with prostate cancer.
Men Urged to Screen Early for Prostate Cancer
Although it has been tried, tested and proven overtime, that early detection of prostate cancer can save lives, this disease continues to claim the lives of numerous Jamaican men each year.
The March 2008 edition of the West Indian Medical Journal, shows that between 1998 and 2002, there were 873 recorded cases of prostate cancer.
Consultant urologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Dr. Belinda Morrison, attributes this grave reality to the continued apprehensive or resistant attitude of many males towards being routinely checked for this disease.
